Feature Website

The St. Norbert Arts Centre, (legal name: L’Hotellerie St. Norbert Inc.) incorporated in 1991, is a non-profit; volunteer run organization with a Board of Directors and a volunteer run management collective, the Living Earth Collective. Environmental consciousness has always played an important role in the organization’s site stewardship mandate.

In 1992, the organization found itself in a two-year battle to ward off a golf course, which would have destroyed 76 acres of grade A riparian forest along the bank of the LaSalle River. From then on, artists and environmentalists have equally participated in site related projects.

The St. Norbert Arts Centre is dedicated to cultural expression, education and environmental stewardship. Situated on a site of spiritual, cultural, historical and environmental significance, site stewardship is the backbone of the Centre's efforts.

A Day in the Life of a
Trappist Monk

The Trappist Monks of the monastery called Our Lady of the Prairies are part of the larger order called the Cistercian Order of Strict Observance.

For 85 years, a monastery in St. Norbert was home at one time to more than 50 Trappist monks. As the City of Winnipeg expanded throughout the 1960’s and 70’s, the once reclusive site of the monastery became threatened.

In 1978, the monks sought a new home in Holland, Manitoba, where they currently reside.
