SNAC is pleased to launch the “SNAC Waste Reduction and Compost Education Initiative.” This program will work to actualize waste reduction in the community of St. Norbert through a waste diversion and a compost education program. SNAC along with youth volunteers from Katimavik will be picking-up organic waste from 30-40 households in the community of St. Norbert. During the spring, summer and fall months this service will be accomplished on bike and bike cart. We currently collect compost from Organic Planet Worker Co-op and Niakwa Pizza in St. Norbert. SNAC will be setting up a community compost demonstration site on St. Norbert Foundation property. This compost site will be a demonstration for the community and be a valuable education tool for St. Norbert schools and St. Norbert residents.

The compost will provide good soil amendment and nutrients for gardens on St. Norbert Foundation land. There will be 3 recycled pallet bins and will demonstrate what people could do in their own back yard.

On the SNAC site there are 3 major
compost demonstration sites:

• A back yard bin site with 7 “lumber lovers” recycled pallet bins
• A large worm bin used for our chicken manure
• A small manure-composting site.

SNAC is working over the summer to expand on our worm and manure sites.
We wish to build a large indoor wormery. Compost is the only nutrient source and soil amendment we use and it makes our clay based soil much easier to work with and provides us with prime soil conditions to grow healthy productive plants.
Free compost workshops and home consultations for St. Norbert residents will be offered.
SNAC has received a grant from the Waste Reduction and Pollution Prevention Fund (WRAPP) of Manitoba Conservation. Over the next year SNAC will be working on this new was reduction and compost education program.
