Background:

The St. Norbert Arts Centre is a dynamic community located at the site of historical, environmental, cultural and spiritual importance – the former Trappist monastery in St. Norbert, on the banks of the LaSalle River. Two thousand years ago, this river was the Assiniboine River. Less than 2kms of windy river away from the forks of the Red River, this area was the travelling, trading and ceremonial grounds of the Ojibway, Cree and Lakota nations. In the historical transition from plains Aboriginal to settler society, the birth of the Red River Metis nation rotted itself here. When the Trappist Monks left in 1978, the community began to seek opportunities to use the site for community purposes.

Over 30 years later, the St. Norbert Arts Cent at the Trappist monastery Park has been home to Shakespeare in the Ruins and has hosted many noted artistic productions including Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer’s Spirit Garden, the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts full length (8 hour) opera, Diana Thorneycroft’s Monstrance and performance artist Rita McKeough’s, to name a few. The St. Norbert Arts Centre hosted the inaugural GerryFest exhibit and performance in August 2020.
